PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (KCTV) -

If your travels take you anywhere near 92nd Terrace and Roe Avenue, you may have noticed a sign along the road.

The family that lives there is giving humanity the benefit of the doubt and hoping whoever stole their property made an honest mistake.

Ken Westphal has lived in Kenilworth for nearly 25 years. It's a quiet, safe, family neighborhood not well known for crime.

Westphal spent his Saturday morning like so many others around him mowing the lawn, or at least getting it started.

"Came back out and I thought, ‘Where did I leave it?’ I walked all the way around the house twice thinking I was losing my mind and instead I had lost mower. It was gone,” Westphal said.

Instead of getting overly upset or even filing a police report, Westphal is trying to stay positive about people.

"If it's somebody that came by and thought I was discarding my mower, maybe they'll see the sign and bring it back … so far, no,” he said.

Until it becomes crystal clear, neighbors are helping neighbors lending their own mower while Westphal waits.

"I hope they really needed a lawnmower badly,” Westphal said.

Whoever took that mower has until Tuesday to return it. At that point, it'll be assumed this was no mistake.
