SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

A 15-year-old led police on a chase Saturday night before crashing at I-435 and Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 435 were shut down due to the crash and northbound traffic was moving very slowly.

According to the Gardner Police Department, an officer was conducting a car check in the area of East Lincoln Lane and North Moonlight Road when the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu put the car in gear and fled the scene, hitting the officer.

According to Kansas Highway Patrol, police then chased the driver, Caleb Michael Metsinger, for aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer.

While trying to elude officers, the teen swerved to avoid stop sticks on northbound I-435. He lost control, went onto the right shoulder of the road, sideswiped a Toyota Prius, and went across all lanes of traffic.

He then crossed the median, hit a southbound Toyota Highlander head-on. The Highlander left the road, went into the right side ditch, rolled over and came to a rest on the driver's side.

Metsinger and three people in the Highlander were taken to a local hospital.

Two of those people were Chad and April Wright, who had minor injuries. The third person was their 1-year-old child, who was taken to the hospital as a precaution and was not injured.

Chad Wright is a firefighter with the Belton Fire Department.

The officer struck in Gardner had minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

Metsinger has been taken into custody and has not yet been charged.
