Third inmate stabbed at El Dorado prison in 2 weeks

Posted: Updated:

A spree of recent stabbings at El Dorado prison add to troubles at the facility, which is already under heavy scrutiny for recent problems.

An El Dorado inmate was stabbed and rushed to Wesley hospital in critical condition around 7:15 p.m. Friday.

It's the second stabbing on Friday that required an inmate to go to the hospital, and the third stabbing in two weeks.

The first stabbing Friday happened around 11:30 a.m. The inmate was stabbed multiple times and was also rushed to Wesley in critical condition.

KDOC spokesperson Todd Fertig sent a statement saying, "An inmate received several puncture wounds in an inmate-on-inmate altercation at El Dorado Correctional Facility (EDCF) at approximately 11:30 a.m. " He said no one else was hurt.

An inmate was also critically stabbed on July 19th, and the circumstances were very similar. The inmate was stabbed multiple times and rushed to Wesley.

Also on Friday, there was an incident around 8 p.m. where about 30 inmates refused to lock down, according to KOSE Union - the union that represents state correctional officers. In a Tweet, @KOSE_Union said "Special Security Team called in at EDCF. EMS just arrived. 30 inmates refusing to stand down."

The prison has been struggling to cope with problems like a severe staffing shortage, overcrowding, unruly inmates, and union grievances on too-long shifts for employees.
