Man hospitalized after being shot by police in Lee's Summit

Posted: Updated:

A man has been hospitalized after being shot by police in Lee's Summit on Friday night.

Around 11:30 p.m., officers were called to an apartment in the 700 block of NE Tudor Road to check on a man who was suicidal.

When officers arrived, they set up a perimeter around the apartment to ensure the safety of everyone involved and nearby. They also evacuated the neighbors, as the man indicated he was armed.

While officers were trying to call the man on the phone, he shot through the door of the apartment and came outside with the weapon in his hands.

The officers told him to drop it and, when he didn't, officers shot him with less lethal impact rounds.

The man was struck multiple times by those rounds and continued to come toward officers with the weapon.

At that point, officers fired their weapons as well and the man was hit by gunfire.

Officers immediately administered first aid and the man was taken to a local hospital.

He is listed as being in serious but stable condition.

As per routine protocol, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office will review the entire incident once the investigation is finished.
