FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint has "proposed" a merger with Charter Communications.

If the merger were to happen it would lead to a "media and communications giant," according to the Wall Street Journal.

Charter's website says, "Charter delivers a wide range of TV, internet and voice services to residential and business customers through the Spectrum brand."

"Spectrum" is a name many in the KC area will be familiar with, as far as an internet or television service provider.

According to a CBS News story published in June, "Charter has said it will offer wireless services next year."

CBS adds that the cable companies are trying to not lose their competitive edge to AT&T. The second-largest wireless provider has expanded into digital content in recent years through its acquisition of DirecTV, which made AT&T the largest provider of pay TV.  AT&T customers can now stream TV over their wireless devices.
