OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

You have a chance to make a difference in a local students life simply by dropping off school supplies in Olathe.

The school supply drive at the Olathe Police Department was supposed to end on July 21, but this year, they’re really hoping for more donations so they’ve extended the drive until Aug. 11.

Every item donated will go to children in need in the Olathe community. And they need new, unused items.

Think of anything a child cold use during the school year like backpacks, glue sticks, Crayons, highlighters, disinfectant wipes, folders, Ziploc bags, socks, shirts and even underwear for small children.

"The great thing about this is it’s at the police department. We’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So no matter what time you’re getting off work or you decide to bring something down, we’re open. It’s right inside our lobby," Sgt. Logan Bonney said.

Bonney says not only does this school drive help families in the community, but it also helps to builds trust between police officers and people in the community.

This is the third year the Olathe Police Department has teamed up with Olathe Public Schools for this drive. Bonney says the turnout has been good this year, but they really need more supplies, so they’re hoping to get more donations by extending the deadline.
