KEARNEY, MO (KCTV) -

A man has been convicted of attacking a woman inside a Kearney church restroom.

Richard L. Bjorgo, 54, was convicted of first-degree assault and attempted sexual abuse in the first degree, along with two counts of armed criminal action.

The 40-year-old woman was attacked on May 4, 2015. She was slashed inside the bathroom.

The woman told police she went into a seemingly empty bathroom, but after leaving a stall, she was confronted by a man who, according to court documents “was hidden from her sight, approached her and put his hands around her shoulder and neck."

The victim said she'd never seen the man before.

She began to struggle and fight with the man.

They ended up with her on the floor of the handicapped stall.

Bjorgo had been in trouble with the law before. In 1994, he was found guilty of attempted murder and kidnapping.

Due to those prior convictions, Bjorgo could face multiple life sentences.
