KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Neighbors were forced from their homes as police worked for hours before finally ending a standoff at a Northland home early Wednesday morning.

The incident started before 9 p.m. on Tuesday at a home in the 8100 block of NE 52nd Street.

Officers arrived and attempted to make contact with a man inside the home whom family members said was armed. Communication attempts failed and a police standoff began.

Negotiators on the scene worked to make contact with the man.

At one time, authorities at the scene thought the man had a grenade. Several people living in the area were asked to leave their homes and were loaded on to an air-conditioned bus due to the possible explosive.

"I was told my wife and I were told not to sit in my backyard because the man had some kind of explosive," Tom, a man who lives in the neighborhood said.

The Kansas City SWAT team, a bomb squad and a drone were called to assist the officers on the scene. Flash-bang grenades were used during the standoff in an effort to get the man’s attention.

Tom says SWAT team members operated out of his backyard for some time during the incident.

The man came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident at about 3 a.m.

Authorities have not said whether or not the man had a grenade.
