KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Cleanup of extensive storm damage will not be cheap or quick for families around the metro.

Many people are rushing to cover damaged roofs before more storms move in on Wednesday.

One couple had a neighbor's tree come crashing into their Kansas City home. A large tree toppled as thunder, lightning and strong winds hit the neighborhood.

"The dog jumped up in my lap scared to death," said Rhonda Smith. "I had a feeling. I had a gut feeling something bad is about to happen. Something is going to happen, electricity is going to go off.

She was right, but it was more than electricity. A large oak tree toppled on their roof. Branches burst through the ceiling into their back room, leaving a hole for heavy rains to soak their home.

"It's huge," she said. "It was like, 'holy smokes look at this thing.'"

The couple says the American Red Cross and their landlord are helping them as cleanup and restoration begins.

They are also thankful the tree twisted before coming down because it missed the living room they were sitting in.
