KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

In times like these, local contractors can be overwhelmed with all the people that need help. Storm cleanup isn’t cheap and people are desperate to get the tree off their house or a hole in their roof fixed.

Scammers see storm damage as an opportunity to swoop in and capitalize.

Typically, they will offer to do the work for a certain price, ask for a portion of the payment in cash right away, say they need to go get the right tools and then never return.

Patience isn’t easy when the damage needs to be fixed, but it will pay off when it comes to clean up.

Here are some tips on avoiding scammers:

  • Always get the proposal in writing.
  • Never pay cash.
  • Do not pay a contractor the full amount up front.
  • Always have the job requirements outlined in a contract with a guarantee and read the fine print.
  • Resist any attempt to be forced into a decision on the spot.

Also, try hiring a local contractor who may be busy, but it’s worth the wait if it can save you hundreds of dollars.
