KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Entertaining your family during the summer months doesn't have to be a struggle, and it doesn't have to be expensive.

Why not head to the Northland and let your little ones explore Penguin Park. It's free to visit and easy to find at the corner of North Norton Avenue and Vivion Road. You really can't miss the giant 25-foot tall fiberglass penguin, along with a kangaroo, elephant and a giraffe.

If inside is more your speed, you can take the whole family to the Roasterie for a free behind-the-scenes tour where you can learn all about the cupping, roasting and blending process. And after the tour, you get a free cup of coffee.

On Wednesday, head to the Overland Park Farmer's Market named "the best farmer's market in Kansas by Cooking Light and Tripping magazines.

For 30 years, this farmers market has provided a huge variety of farm fresh produce, unique specialty items and local food. It opens at 7:30 a.m., so you can get there early and beat the heat.

And if you want to teach your kids about history in a hands-on way while letting them burn off some energy, head to the Shoal Creek Living History Museum. Grounds are open from dawn to dusk and admission is free.

It's a fascinating 80-acre museum showing you what life was like in a typical village in the1800s, including authentic log cabins and homes.
