JACKSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities in Jackson County had to pull two people off a metro lake early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews say they were called about 3:30 a.m. to Longview Lake after people were reported stranded on the water.

The women were out fishing when a security guard heard one of them yelling for help.

The guard was able to help navigate one of the women to shore and pull her from here kayak. She was taken to an area hospital for exhaustion but told crews there was another woman who was still missing.

“These boats were inflatables. They did have navigation lights but didn’t have any other comforts,” said Battalion Chief Larry Young of the Kansas City Fire Department Rescue Division.

Rescue crews launched a search boat and found the other woman on the other side of the lake.

Fire crews say they were lucky the security guard heard them and say that’s why it’s important to have a security measure in place.

“Not having a cell phone with you nowadays is kind of foolish, not to have one with you,” Young said. “Always stay hydrated. Fluids now in this time of year is critical to stay hydrated.”

Both women are expected to be okay.

Lake goers say they are used to seeing people fishing on the lake shortly before sunrise, but never in the middle of the night.

"Anytime you’re in the water at night, when it’s dark, there’s inherent danger to that," Young said.
