KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

It's been one year since Kansas City, KS police captain Robert "Dave" Melton was shot and killed in the line of duty.

Melton died on July 19, 2016. He was assisting in the search of a gunman in a drive-by shooting when he drove up to someone who matched the suspect description.

Before Melton could get out of his vehicle, he was shot.

The Kansas City, KS Police Department honored Melton's memory on Wednesday.

Melton worked at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for nine years.

A motorcycle ride was held in memory of Melton. It started from Klamm Park and ended at the Leavenworth cemetery.

Two men are in jail for Melton's murder. DaQon Sipple took a plea deal and will spend 21 months in prison. Jamaal Lewis, the alleged gunman, has been charged with capital murder and is awaiting trial.
