PAOLA, KS (KCTV) -

Police say a mischievous night among teens ended in a water rescue at the Lake Miola swim beach.

Officers were patrolling the lake about 1 a.m. Wednesday when they noticed cars parked by the beach. When they approached, a group of teens ran off. Three of them, two girls and one boy, ran into the lake to get away.

"At that point, he’s kind of limited. So he was just yelling for them to come back to shore," said Lt. Eric Jenkins with the Paola  Police Department.

The other teens that stayed behind told officers they had all been drinking. That's when the officer noticed one of the girls who was in the lake was struggling to swim.

"As soon as she started showing signs that she was struggling, he took off his duty belt and duty vest and he ran about 75 feet and swam and dragged her back into shore," Jenkins said.

Several agencies came out to help search the lake for the other two teens. They brought boats and sonar equipment.

Hours later, crews were notified both teens were safe at home. Police say no one was hurt.
