JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

The return of the hot temperatures means you need to keep an eye on the elderly who may struggle to stay cool.

Not everyone has family and friends to check on them as the temperatures rise to dangerous levels. And for those living without A/C, it can become deadly.

Johnson County Meals on Wheels does more than just deliver food. On a week when it will feel like 100 plus, nutrition program manager Nancy Tangary says it is important to have extra eyes on those who need help.

"Their immune systems are compromised when they’re a senior citizen, and so that makes them more at risk, and they don’t necessarily feel thirsty. That’s a sign of dehydration," she said.

The Meals on Wheels program goes through Johnson Country delivering 550 meals each week. Because of that, the volunteers delivering food come to know those receiving the meals and their schedules very well.

If someone looks different or doesn’t answer the door, the volunteer will know to take action.

"Because they deliver every week they notice any differences in the individual that comes to the door to receive the meal," Tangary said.

If something seems off, they contact the Meals on Wheels director or call 911.
