OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Authorities in Overland Park have arrested a man after they say he murdered his stepfather early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. at a duplex on Nieman Road near 92nd Street.

Police say they were called to the duplex over a family dispute.

Phillip Stanley, 32, has been charged with premeditated murder for the death of Henry Gates. A $1 million bond has been requested.

As officers approached the house they heard between five and seven gunshots. The officers hid behind trees and pulled out their guns.

The suspect then walked out the door. The murder weapon was still inside the house.

Officers told the man to put his hands up and then took him into custody.

Police say the suspect was in his 30s and that he shot his 62-year-old stepfather during an argument. The suspect's mother called 911.

"She was very distressed, obviously, but my heart goes out to the family and we aren't really saying the name yet because the family has not been notified yet," Overland Park Public Information Officer John Lacy said.

Jennifer Johnson has lived in the area for seven years. She knows the man who died and the family and says they were always friendly to her and she would never expect anything like what happened Wednesday.

“Wow, you know. My goodness. You know things like this don’t usually happen out here,” Johnson said.

Johnson says she woke up to a phone call from her neighbor, and police banging on her door.

“She called me and said, 'Did you hear those gunshots?' I said, 'No, I didn’t hear any gunshots.' She was like, 'Oh my god.'”

“Wow, you know. My goodness. You know things like this don’t usually happen out here,” Johnson said.

Authorities do not know what started the argument. The suspect and the mother are both speaking with detectives.

Darreon Collins lives next door to the accused shooter and says he got a weird vibe from the guy.

"I would hope that something like that wouldn't happen, but I could believe it would happen with that guy,” he said.

Neighbors say there was something about him that made them uneasy. It was just one of those things they say you can't quite put your finger on...

"He did give a creepy vibe to some people in the neighborhood. My roommate … he'd make these cat call noises to her when she'd walk inside,” Michael McConnell said.

The accused shooter is due in court Thursday.
