KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An apartment project that has been discussed for nearly 10 years has finally broken ground in the Crossroads.

When finished, the 12-story building will be the first apartment high-rise to be constructed in the area. That's because it'll be the first to be built from the ground up.

The building will be located at 21st and Wyandotte streets.

The $40-million high-rise will include over 120 luxury apartments ranging from studios to multiple bedroom apartments. The first floor will also include retail and a parking garage.

According to David Johnson with the Crossroads Community Association, having more residents will boost business in the Crossroads.

"This is it located in the Crossroads, especially retailers will have a larger pool of the draw from the play. So they won't have to rely on visitors it can be sort of infrequent especially the crossroads, to make ends meet," he said.

The anticipated completion date is set for late 2018.
