JOHNSON COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy is in the hospital after being hit by a fleeing suspect Monday evening.

The incident started about 5:55 p.m. when the Jackson County Sheriff's Office requested help with a suspect who had been involved in a vehicular assault at a grocery store in Lone Jack, MO.

Authorities said the suspect was eastbound on US 50 Highway from Lone Jack and believed he was to heading into Johnson County, MO.

At about 6:17 p.m., the Jackson County Sheriff's Office told the Johnson County office that the suspect was at the El Paso restaurant at US 50 Highway and Missouri 131 Highway and that they were currently talking to him on the phone.

A Johnson County deputy found the suspect's vehicle at the restaurant and waited until he left the restaurant.

When the deputy approached the suspect he became verbally abusive and was uncooperative. He refused any and all instructions given to him by the deputy.

As the suspect tried to flee the parking lot, he placed the car into gear and began to drive away while the deputy attempted to stop him. As the vehicle fled the parking lot, it struck the deputy who in response, fired at the vehicle.

The vehicle left the restaurant and traveled northbound on Missouri 131 Highway at a high rate of speed.

After approximately two miles, the driver of the fleeing vehicle lost control, ran off the road and overturned. He was arrested and taken from the scene to a nearby hospital for treatment. He is currently on a 24-hour hold for assault on a law enforcement officer.

The deputy was taken to the Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, MO for treatment of his injuries. He has been placed on paid administrative leave as part of the critical incident protocol.

Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
