JOHNSON COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

Emergency crews had to shut down eastbound Interstate 435 west of Antioch Road after a fiery wreck on Monday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the wreck involves a semi-truck and "multiple cars."

One person suffered critical injuries in the wreck, while two more suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

Overland Park police say the wreck happened around 5:15 p.m. on Monday. Police say witnesses heard three or four explosions.

UPDATE from Overland Park police:

The Overland Park Fire Department says crews from Lenexa and Olathe assisted in the response. It took 50 minutes for the crews to get the fire under control.

Police believe this started from a rear-end accident, but they're still investigating.

“Our crews, literally upon arrival, found the critical patient – all the patients – out of the cars so there was no extrication needed," said Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson Jason Rhodes. "Now, whether they got out on their own power or they were assisted, I don’t have that information."

Rhodes says explosions are typical in crashes.

Two eastbound lanes were reopened at about 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday. One lane remains closed while crews work to clear the smoldering scene.
