ATCHISON, KS -

The Atchison community is continuing to remember Bethany Root, who was killed in a plane crash in Cummings, KS on Sunday.

Root managed the Amelia Earhart Airport. She flew a crop duster and made friends with just about everyone in town.

"She was just an incredible young lady," said Travis Grossman, a friend.

Grossman says after Friday night's Amelia Earhart Festival, she wanted to take a short flight with Vlado Lenoch in the World War II era fighter pilot that crashed on Sunday.

"She was so excited to be going out and be able to go fly with him," Grossman said.

Grossman says Lenoch was among the best P-51 pilots in the country.

"It's such a huge loss," he said. "There's a hole in our heart now that she's gone."

Trey Cocking, the city manager of Atchison, says Root was instrumental in bringing new life to the airport. She was teaching flying lessons and planning special events.

"She's somebody who was so passionate about what she did," Cocking said. "She just kind of took flight and enjoyed it."
