KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

New manslaughter charges were filed against a 19-year-old in connection with the death of 9-year-old in a recent wreck.

According to an amended complaint filed Monday, Kaveon C. Cottonham of Grandview now faces a charge of first-degree involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of a child.

The Jackson  County Prosecutor's Office earlier filed charges against Cottonham, before the child's death.

According to court records, Cottonham was in a car in the area of 55th and Woodland Avenue on July 12 when a marked patrol car tried to pass him in order to respond to another call.

A witness told police that Cottonham thought the police were trying to pull him over. So, he ran and pulled ahead of the patrol car. Cottonham was speeding and ignored traffic signals.

He ultimately wrecked at 51st Street and Woodland Avenue.

Three people were injured in the crash, including a 9-year-old passenger in the backseat.

After the crash, Cottonham got out of the car and fled. A witness also said they saw men carrying guns leave the vehicle that the Cottonham was driving.

The child passed away July 14 as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
