KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Summer is here, but it doesn't have to break the bank.

There are plenty of cheap and even free things for families to do throughout the Kansas City area.

Families can start the week with a beautiful walk through a world class garden in the heart of Kansas City when they visit the Kauffman Memorial Garden.

Inspired by Ewing and Muriel Kauffman's world travels, the two-acre garden welcomes visitors year-round. Visitors can enjoy more than 7000 plants, beautiful water features and the secluded secret garden behind the conservatory.

Admission is free and the garden is open every day.

Later, families can spend an afternoon at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center.

Visitors can enjoy the fascinating exhibits and performances recognizing the contributions African Americans made to the cultural development of Kansas City.

Admission is free but there may be a small fee for some events and classes.

On Thursday morning, Parent’s with children that love a good treasure hunt can head to the Overland Park Arboretum.

Children can scope out the learning garden on a treasure hunt for cool prizes and sneak in some educational stuff along the way.

For those who are not members of the arboretum, the cost is $15 per child.

On Friday, families can bring their lawn chairs and picnic blankets and leave the wallet behind to enjoy an evening of free music at Santa Fe Commons Park in Overland Park during Music In The Park

Ernest James Zydeco is performing at the event and there will also be a Cajun Cabin food truck for those who want to splurge on a snack.
