SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

An event was held on Saturday to remember the life of Adrian Jones and raise awareness about child abuse.

The event featured a ride and a release of balloons, and it was about remembering who he was -- not how he died.

A prayer, written from the heart by Adrian’s sister Keiona Doctor, was read by his grandmother Judy Conway.

“Lord, there are times in our lives when we just have to ask, ‘Why?’ Forgive our persistence and confusion and even our anger as we try to understand.”

It’s hard to for anyone to understand how a boy could die of such terrible abuse, but the gathering wasn’t about that.

Adrian Jones was once simply a boy who loved Spiderman and candy.

Seeing other children makes Doctor miss Jones’ exuberance.

“I guess I could say ‘scatterbrained’ in a good way,” Doctor said, describing her brother. “Just always, like, everywhere. But you loved him for it.”

His family and advocates who helped organized the event want people to get moving and push for changes to the system that failed Jones.

“Get more funding for DCF,” Conway said. “Ease their caseloads so they're not taking care of so many children.”

Even though it ended sadly, Jones’ life has new meaning.

“In losing him, we've also gained his voice that we can use for other children,” Conway said.

They ended their ride in Topeka because, according to Adrian's grandmother, there's important work to be done.

Jones’ family is pushing lawmakers to pass Adrian’s Act, which would hold witnesses of abuse accountable if they don’t report it.
