Mother speaks after car is stolen with 3-year-old inside

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

It's hard to forget the heartwarming moment when a little girl who was abducted in a car theft found her way into the arms of a KCK police officer.

That was on Wednesday night and, on Friday, that little girl's mother spoke to the media for the first time.

She expressed her gratitude and the prosecutor expressed his frustration.

The mother said her boyfriend was parked at one of the pumps at a gas station at 7th and Reynolds with little Amaya Vester asleep in the back.

Then he went inside for a drink.

When KCTV5’s Chopper5 spotted the stolen car in Tonganoxie later on, the doors were open and 3-year-old Amaya was still inside.

She was found safely two hours after she was whisked away in the car theft. However, the Wyandotte County District Attorney said the heist turned abduction took less than two minutes.

The gas station's surveillance captured that moment on camera.

"Those two minutes turned into the longest two hours of this child's mother's life,” said District Attorney Mark Dupree.

The girl's mother described her take on her daughter's experience in the hours that followed.

“I think she slept all the way through it and, when she woke up, she was just in the middle of nowhere and there was nobody there,” she said.

The district attorney didn't know how long Amaya been sitting out there, but described the area as wooded, with waist high weeds and no homes for miles. It was an outcome that easily could have been much worse if she had wandered off.

On Friday, charges came down against two people for kidnapping, child endangerment and car theft.

However, the district attorney’s stern statements were directed not just at them.

"If you do not have time to unbuckle your child and take them in the store with you, leave them at home or with the sitter,” Dupree said.

He said investigators are still trying to gather more info about why Amaya was left in the car unattended before determining whether to pursue charges on that end of things.
