LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

A new downtown Lenexa has been in the making for about 20 years, and its civic campus is finally expected to open at the end of the month.

The city’s new downtown is part of a citizen-led process called Vision 20/20.

Inside the new city hall, you can find city departments and Johnson County’s first Park University Campus.

The new state-of-the-art recreation center has an indoor track, water park and fitness equipment.

“People are so excited and there’s been so much work and thought that has gone into this civic project, and we can’t wait for citizens to get in here. We’ve been leading some tours through the rec center, and people are blown away,” said Denise Rendina, Lenexa’s Communication Manager.

The city hall building at 87th Street and Renner Road is connected to the public market and right next door to the recreation center. City Hall and the rec center will open their doors July 31.

However, you must wait until Sept. 1 to enjoy the public market.

The market focuses on local food businesses with 85 percent of the vendors being food-related.

Issues with build outs and licensing have put a delay on its opening, but market manager Carmen Chopp said it is worth the wait.

“We could open. We may have a few vendors that would be open July 31, but we really - as the city – we want people to come in and have a positive experience here in this space, and we want them to come back, and so we want to put our best foot forward,” said Chopp.

There is a lot more ground breaking and building planned later this year and over the years to come in the new downtown area, including a new library, aquatic center and luxury apartments.
