KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The scene of a police officer hugging a 3-year-old child who was inside a stolen car was heartwarming to watch, but Kansas City, KS Police Major William Howard does not want the credit.

Howard says he was in the right place at the right time.

"We were all concerned for the child," Howard said.

Howard was off duty when he heard scanner chatter and decided to leave his house to help.

Chopper 5 captured the moment Howard picked up 3-year-old Amaya Vester.

“Well, I just happened to be in the area when our dispatcher was alerted that a helicopter had spotted the vehicle," Howard said. “She was scared and disoriented is how I would describe her. I wanted to make her feel comfortable. I didn’t want her to be scared of a stranger approaching her. I didn’t have a uniform on.”

Howard said 30 police cars were behind him and ready to start looking for the woman.

Howard said it was a good example of teamwork between police and local media outlets.

“A child is saved because of it," he said. "She was abandoned out there in the middle of nowhere with the car running and it could have been very tragic if we could not have gotten her spotted from the air like that.”
