KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

An expansion of the QuikTrip in Westport will move forward following a meeting on Thursday afternoon with councilmembers.

Hours before the meeting, city councilmembers were able to talk with QuikTrip representatives to see if they could come to a compromise on the final five concerns West Plaza's neighborhood association had with the gas station expansion.

Councilwomen Kate Shields and Jolie Justus introduced an amendment to the final ordinance that offered up some changes the neighborhood association wanted all along.

The biggest concern was addressed: Mercier Street will remain open and function as a city street.

There was a compromise on easements, street design, landscaping, and restrictions on deliveries during overnight hours.

QuikTrip wants a 1.5-acre expansion because they say the current location is too small and that there is not enough parking. They say the layout was not designed to handle current customer needs.

Both groups have met numerous times over the past year and there have been multiple design plans presented.

Just last week, both groups sat down to try and iron out the gas station’s proposed expansion before today’s council meeting, but not everyone walked away happy.

On Thursday, it seemed that had changed.

"We had asked them to do the very same things last Friday and they would not do it,” said Julie Tenenbaum, V.P. of the West Plaza Neighborhood Association. “For the councilwomen, they did it."

"We got to a point where we had met some, we had some differences with the neighborhood and we really needed some help from the council and some guidance on how to get the project to move forward,” Jason Acord, QuikTrip’s Division Real Estate Manager, said. “That's what we got and we're very happy."

The West Plaza QuikTrip expansion will move forward now.

The neighborhood association will be able to review final plan details as they come in.
