KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The extreme heat is taking its toll at the Kansas City Rescue Mission, and now they need help.

“I’m down to one tube of hydrocortisone cream because of bug bites and just rashes that the men are having,” said Liz Preston, a nurse at the Kansas City Rescue Mission.

Preston said the drop in supplies is due to being exposed to extreme temperatures. She fears as summer continues, it is only going to get worse.

They are low on pain medication like Tylenol and Aleve because the heat causes inflammation, and Preston had to treat some men for knee, back, and arthritic pain. And it does not stop there.

“Actually a lot of foot issues. Men are walking the city looking for a place to find relief from the heat, so as a result, they’re having blisters,” Preston said.

In the summer, the center gives away sunscreen, lip balm and water to help protect people from the heat, but what they really need right now is any kind of footcare.

“Some of the men really do not have shoes that are supporting, so they’re tired. They walk the streets in the city, and they’re looking for a cool place to stay, and they’re just tired and worn out,” Preston said.

If you are interested in helping the rescue mission, you can go to the center on Cherry Street to drop off donations.
