KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The City of Fountains needs some work, and it will not be cheap.

One such Kansas City fountain is at Meyer Circle and Ward Parkway.

The Kansas City Parks and Recreation has asked for $300,000 to finish repairs to the Sea Horse Fountain. The cost is so high due to unnecessary damage the fountain has incurred.

“A lot of the money we’ve had to spend on this fountain is due to vandalism,” said Jordan Cline, a landscape architect for parks and recreation department.

The old center of the fountain is in storage, covered in graffiti.

With construction only 25 percent complete, it is far from where it needs to be. The money would revamp the fountain in a large way, according to Cline.

“That’s going to do things like repoint stone and wall, which will give it a better appearance as well as keep some of the moisture out. We’re going to upgrade the lighting to color changing LEDs for Chiefs and Royals when they are in season,” said Cline.

In 2013, the Wish Upon a Fountain campaign was launched to redo eight of the city’s most prestigious fountains.

A group had raised more than $950,000 to repair the iconic fountain, and in April, the city agreed to pay the difference.

“We’re really hoping this is going to last for another 30 years. That’s without maintenance, which is sometimes how fountains are left,” Cline said.

If all works out, the fountain is set to be completed by mid-September.
