LEAVENWORTH, KS (KCTV) -

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting.

The Leavenworth Police Department said the man was shot and killed at Rose and Pennsylvania streets. The shooting happened about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the police department, an officer was responding to a call about a stolen vehicle. While there, the officer reported that gunfire was being exchanged.

The man has since been identified as 47-year-old Antonio Garcia, Jr. of Leavenworth. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members of the man who was shot arrived at the scene and spoke to police.

Police would not say if the man was armed or what lead to the officer drawing his weapon.

"I want the community to know that we have a great deal of confidence in the KBI to come in and conduct the investigation thoroughly and timely," Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens said. "We know the matter is important so we have their confidence that they're going to do that."

The officer who fired his weapon has been with the Leavenworth Police Department for two years.

Heather Garcia, 41, of Leavenworth, was also arrested during the incident for interference of a law enforcement officer; concealing, destroying or altering evidence and criminal damage to property. She is the wife of Antonio Garcia.

"We do have one person detained that was here at the time the event took place," Kitchens said. "We're not commenting exactly who that was but there is one person being detained and we're trying to get a little more clear about their role."

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
