Kansas City businesses burglarized under similar circumstances

Posted: Updated:

Kansas City businesses are being hit with burglaries with a set of similar circumstances.

Westport Ice Cream Bakery, Mario’s Restaurant, Westport Coffee House, Run 816, Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard in Brookside and Yogurtini in Blue Springs have all been victims of these burglaries recently.

The burglar busts through the door and takes the cash register.

Owner of Westport Ice Cream Bakery Steve Engravalle believes this is much bigger than a few isolated incidents.

“This is not just some dancing, singing sprite coming in and breaking my window and taking a few things. This is now an assault on what we do every single day,” Engravalle said.

Owners of Run 816 says the broken door was a nuisance and the burglar didn’t get away with any cash, but it still feels personal.

“We all work hard for our money. We're local, small independent businesses. We don't appreciate it,” said Tracy Pigg, co-owner of Run 816.

Westport Ice Cream Bakery and Run 816 were hit around the same time Saturday morning. Mario’s Restaurant was also hit sometime Saturday morning.

Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard was struck early Friday.

Yogurtini’s break-in occurred July 5.

Police are not confirming a connection between the burglaries, but Steve and several other business owners think it may be the same guy and want him caught.

“You're hitting people who maybe that $5,000 in damage will put you out of business,” Engravalle said. “What you're stealing from us, you can't get a bus ticket on greyhound to get out of town fast enough. I'm coming and I'm going to find you.”

If you know anything that might help police call Crime Stoppers at 474-TIPS.
