Paul Scott, a 69-year-old retired fire captain in Johnson County, died in a crash at K-7 and Parallel Parkway on Thursday.

His former coworkers honor his memory, though they consider themselves to be more like his family.

“Anytime you lose somebody, even a retiree whose been retired since 1998, he’s still a part of the family," said Deputy Chief Jeff Scott. "So, it’s a difficult time."

Jeff Scott was a young firefighter climbing his way through the ranks of Consolidated Fire District No. 2 when he met Paul.

“Paul was one of those guys that you just picked almost everything he did because he was just that guy," Jeff remembered. "Good firefighter. Common sense firefighter. Great captain. Great leader."

He said Paul was heading home on Thursday when he was involved in a four-car collision at the intersection of K-7 and Parallel Parkway.

Paul died at the scene.

Ed Barger worked with Paul for years.

Paul was a smart, aggressive, confident firefighter with a big personality, according to Barger.

The news of his death came as a shock.

“It’s just a reiteration of something that all of these guys know every day when they come in, you know?" Barger commented. "Life’s short, whether you’re at work or off-duty, already hit that retirement age and off into the golden years. It’s fleeting."

Paul Scott leaves behind a wife and daughters.

The Deputy Chief says Paul’s family is doing the best they can and are making funeral arrangements, but nothing has been finalized yet.
