WARRENSBURG, MO (KCTV) -

Warrensburg police are investigating after someone dumped 17 dogs at a baseball field without any food or water on the Fourth of July.

They abandoned them just down the road from the city's animal shelter.

KCTV5 News talked to the shelter's manager who said they need help caring for the large number of animals.

Right now, veterinarians are assessing all of the rescued dogs to make sure they get the medical care they need.

Many of the abandoned dogs are terrified to be living inside a shelter. Employees are trying to comfort them and help them learn to be comfortable around people.

Warrensburg Animal Shelter Manager Sarah Patton said, “They are in very bad condition. All of them had severe matting of their coat. They all have skin issues from the matting. They have urine burns on the pads of their feet.”

A driver spotted the dogs after someone ditched them near picnic tables at the baseball fields off Division Road.

There were several of them running around and they caught as many as they could the first day. However, it took several days to entice the rest of the dogs with treats or catch them using live traps.

Sadly, one of the dogs was found on the train tracks right beside the shelter and did not survive.

The shelter needs blankets, towels, and monetary donations to pay for much needed medical care and grooming.

Most of the dogs are female and so there is a potential that some of them are pregnant.

The dogs won't be ready for adoption until they give birth and are spayed or neutered.

The goal is to find all of the dogs safe, forever homes. However, they need time to finish assessment.

If you are interested in adopting, you'll need to call or email the shelter. You can reach them by calling 660-747-7156 or sending an email to sarah.patton@warrensburg-mo.com

If you have any information about who abandoned the dogs, call the Warrensburg Police at 660-747-2265.
