KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Loretto Academy is facing a foreclosure sale because the property owners are behind by about a half million dollars in taxes.

People who live at Loretto Academy said that they first saw notice signs on Wednesday and that they aren't sure what to think.

The Loretto was once a Catholic school and now doubles as a housing complex and a popular wedding venue.

The future of the building is uncertain because property owners are behind on their taxes.

If they don't pay around $500,000 in back taxes, Jackson County will put the building up for sale.

According to the Jackson County website, if a property owner is delinquent for three years, their property faces a foreclosure sale to recover back taxes.

Records obtained from the county show that the owners of Loretto did not pay taxes in 2013, 2014, or 2015.

There are eight other homes around the corner on 40th street with notices and those homes are owned by the same couple.

The notice said that if taxes aren't paid by Aug. 31, the Loretto and the other properties will go up for sale at the Jackson County Courthouse.

The county said there is a way for the owner to stop a tax sale, which is by paying taxes and penalties in full or entering into a payment contract. ?

KCTV5 News reached out to the Loretto for comment, but have not heard back at the time of publication.
