Libraries surprisingly popular with millennials

Posted: Updated:

It’s surprising that one certain generation of Americans is bringing back the popularity of the public library: millennials.

Millennials are often maligned by other generations, but recent studies show they are more independent than people of other ages, better at saving money, and are spending more time at public libraries than any other age group.

Local public libraries say they've noticed the surge in millennials visiting their branches in recent years.

Plus, it's not just for the books.

Kansas City millennial Amanda Graor is one of those avid visitors. She said she and her friends love visiting the library because of all the speakers and special programming.

Pew Research Center’s study showed that about half of millennials in the U.S. visit public libraries. Compare that to 36 percent of baby boomers.

“I think there's been a steady increase in us using the library, especially as the library does more and more programming at night,” Graor said. “They have talks. They'll bring people in to do book signings or things. A lot of my peers come to the library on a really regular basis.”

“We also see a lot of parents using our family services,” said Courtney Lewis, Kansas City Public Library Spokesperson. “We see a lot of  moms coming in for storytime and that's the time -- late 20s, early 30s -- where we see a lot of people starting families.”

The study also shows that all the technology available now at public libraries is another huge draw. The Kansas City Public Library is dedicated to that and also offers a variety of free technology training classes that are open to the public.

Libraries are also convenient because they are in central locations and many have cafes attached or nearby, so it's a great setting for groups to get together and millennials love it.
