LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

A new phone scam has reached the metro and has cost a Lenexa woman nearly $10,000.

Lenexa police say the scammer claimed to be from the United States government.

The scammer was a man, who told the woman she was eligible for a free grant because she is a loyal, tax-paying citizen. He then asked her to buy gift cards to transfer the money to and then to give them that information.

The woman did and then sent over her bank account information.

Police say the caller asking the woman to buy gift cards was what tipped them off that it was a scam. They say not actual government or police agency will ever ask you to pay anything in gift cards.

Lenexa Police Department Public Information Officer Danny Chavez says the woman is the only one who has reported the recent scam, but also says they've had many reported scams in the past.

"One of her biggest concerns was just trying to warn other people to not fall victim to this scam," Chavez said. "Unfortunately, this is a common scam if you look at federal trade commissions website they are aware of this scam and she knew it would be very difficult for us to investigate this type of crime."

Authorities have a warning for anyone who receives a similar call.

They say to be on the lookout for calls from New York and Washington D. C. area codes and want everyone to know not to fall for the fake phone calls or give out information over the phone.

Authorities also offered some red flags to watch out for if you receive any form of a suspicious phone call:

  • Look out for callers who say you've won or been specially selected for something.
  • Look out for callers who say you have to make up your mind right away.
  • Look out for callers who say they will just put the shipping and handling charges on your card.
  • Lookout for callers who want to give you big prizes like travel packages, free trial offers, loans or grants.
