KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Airbnb has turned into a popular alternative to staying in a hotel room, and it is a quick way to earn some extra cash for that extra bedroom in your house.

It also has turned into a popular target for scam artists.

Airbnb has made it clear, people should not conduct business off their app or website.

Olathe resident Terri Fox has been an Airbnb host for three months.

“It’s fabulous. We love it. We’ve enjoyed our people. We’ve had people from all over the place. Here for business, here for pleasure,” she explained.

Fox says she feels safe when it comes to the type of information that is shared between her and her potential renters.

“As a host, I know that my telephone number and address are not given out until the person hits the ‘yes, I’m paying’ button. Then the money is transferred from their account into Airbnb to hold it,” Fox relayed.

Though the process has been smooth for Fox, others have not been so lucky.

Scammers have been known to create fake listings, as well as fake emails that are very official looking.

Airbnb says they will never ask you to wire money or pay another user directly.

They suggest the following tips to keep your hard-earned cash safe from scammers’ hands.

Do not email a potential host outside of the Airbnb website app.

Use Airbnb’s secure on-platform messaging tool to talk with potential hosts.

Lastly, read and understand Airbnb’s refund policy.

“All you need to do is stay on our secure Airbnb platform throughout the entire process, from communication to booking to payment, and you’ll be protected,” an Airbnb spokesperson said in a statement.

The company also recommends you review the ratings for each listing to see what previous guests have to say about your potential rental and host.
