KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Holidays are times of gathering with friends and family and celebrating life. They are even times of setting aside differences and coming together with strangers.

Independence Day is no different, but it comes with added risks.

Fireworks can be dangerous, and even the most skilled fireworks handler can experience injury.

The University of Kansas Health System released their Fireworks Injury Report for 2017.  The data spans from the afternoon of June 30 to the morning of July 5.

Overall, firework-related injuries are down significantly.  Only 15 people were treated at a University of Kansas Health System during the five-day span, compared to 27 people in 2016.

Of those 15, 73 percent were males and 27 percent females.

Similar to years past, the most common injury locations are to the hands and face.

Mortars caused 33 percent of the injuries while sparklers caused 20 percent.

The most severe injury was a 40 percent total body surface area burn.

However, there were no finger amputations required this year, unlike five amputations last year.

In whole, firework-related injuries are the lowest they have been since at least 2010.

Even though the data for this study only counts the University of Kansas Health System, one should always remember the risks of using fireworks and use them responsibly.
