JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Driving and boating are both things that seem to go hand in hand with the Fourth of July in Missouri but unfortunately, they both can end in injury, or worse, death.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported 14 traffic deaths, zero boating deaths and zero drownings over the 2017 holiday.

The Independence Day counting period began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

During that period, the MSHP reported 494 vehicle crashes, 186 injuries, 14 fatalities, 172 people arrested for driving while intoxicated and 118 drug related arrests.

They also reported seven boat crashes, four injuries, zero fatalities, 23 people arrested for boating while intoxicated and 33 drug related arrests.

The state saw an increase in fatalities but a decrease in both injuries and accidents involving vehicles after five people were killed and 565 were injured in 1,370 accidents during the 2016 holiday period.

Boating related incidents decreased in 2017 after 11 crashes, six injuries and zero deaths during the 2016 holiday period.
