OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Lenexa firefighters hoped to bring joy to kids along the community days parade route as part of a 4th of July celebration.

When weather canceled those plans, they decided to make their own parade, in the parking lot of the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Thousands of people are following Alexander Goodwin’s journey to healing as the boy from the United Kingdom fights cancer in the Kansas City area.

“I'm having lots of fun because I love dinosaurs,” Alex said.

On Tuesday, Alex got a surprise visit from Lenexa firefighters and their “Prehistoric Lenexa” parade float.

“We were bummed because we spent every day since Friday working on it and we were just going to drive through neighborhoods when it stopped raining and give out candy,” Lenexa firefighter Corey Ingram said. “I've got 5,000 pieces of candy for the parade.”

The firefighters made sure the candy, dinosaur suits and float didn’t go to waste. Their surprise visit just so happened to come on the eve of a very important day for Alex.

“Tomorrow is going to be the biggest day of my life because it is the surgery tomorrow to defeat this cancer once and for all,” Ingram said.

The 2017 parade theme was Lenexa through the decades.

Ingram says he picked dinosaurs because he has two boys at home and thought it would be a hit with kids in the community.

KCTV5 wishes Alexander the best as he undergoes surgery on Wednesday.
