OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

The Star Spangled Spectacular at Corporate Woods is considered one of the metro’s best 4th of July events.

Each year thousands of people attend the event, sponsored by Overland Park Rotary, Corporate Woods and the City of Overland Park.

The fireworks are expected to start about 9:30 p.m.

And officials made sure there was plenty to do before the sky filled with light.

Nearly a dozen food vendors filled the area, with foods ranging from homemade barbecue, to ice cream, to favorites like funnel cake and shaved ice.

Some of the vendors also have activities to keep kids entertained.

"It feels good. You know, lots of people from different backgrounds, different ethnicities at one place celebrating for one America, Independence Day," said Arun Singla of Overland Park.

"The fireworks are really nice. They always have something new to show and the finales are awesome," said Annabel Nolker of Overland Park.

Officials have hosted the event for more than 25 years, and some set up chairs early in the morning, trying to get the best spot.

"I've been coming since they began,” Overland Park resident Terry Asbury said. “I believe it's 26 years ago and for me, it's a great family tradition to come here. My kids will be here, and their kids very shortly, and it's terrific."

The event does have beer for sale but people are not allowed to bring their own alcohol.

Those looking to bring a blanket to sit on are advised to bring a tarp or plastic cover to put under the blanket after morning rain hit the area.
