PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (KCTV) -

Heavy downpours and threats of severe weather canceled the Village Fest Independence day celebration in Prairie Village on Tuesday morning.

After 21 years, officials say the event was the first year Village Fest has been canceled, but it didn't stop many from sticking around and enjoying the day.

People gathered early Tuesday to start the Fourth of July bash before the downpour ultimately canceled the event.

Despite mother nature, celebrators still made due for a couple hours, while dodging raindrops.

“We all had umbrellas on, and rain jackets. The area was still full when we got here and they were having fun either visiting or playing with slime or listening to what was going to happen next,” eventgoer Maris Herndon said.

With no sign of coming sunlight, city leaders had to make the difficult decision to cancel.

“There are hundreds of hours of staff time and volunteer time. Lots of vendors that have been planning for months and months. A lot of disappointed Prairie Village residents today,” Meghan Buum of the City of Prairie Village said.

During the early moments of the celebration, eventgoers were able to sing the National Anthem, have a pancake breakfast, a pie baking contest and hand out spirit awards to members of the community.

Buum said the event took a year to prepare, and a total of 15 vendors had plans to be at the event.

“It’s a labor of love for a lot of people and it’s very disappointing to have to cancel,” Buum said.

Village Fest will not reschedule their celebration.
