KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Summer gas prices are at a historic low this Fourth of July.

If you are still considering driving for this holiday, here is another reason to do it.

Drivers are getting a break at the pump due to low gas prices.

Gasbuddy.com says fuel prices in Kansas City have fallen more than 4-percent in the past week. The average price is now $2.03 per gallon, below the national average of $2.22 per gallon.

This time last year, prices were five cents a gallon more than this year.

Currently, prices are 14 cents lower than last month.

Independence has the lowest price in the area at $1.84 per gallon at Valley View Parkway. On the Kansas side, $1.91 per gallon is the price you pay in Leavenworth.

Johnson County boasts one of the most expensive gas prices in the metro at $2.29 in Overland Park and even as high as $2.40 on Iron Street.

However, due to high supply and low demand, gas prices won’t break the bank this holiday week. The cause is American oil rigs and fracking picking up production.
