BLUE SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) -

Police are investigating and one person is in custody after someone was assaulted and a body was found in a house on Friday night.

At about 8:20 p.m., officers with the Blue Springs Police Department went to the 1400 block of SW 23rd Street on a call about an assault.

The victim told officers that his nephew was the one who had assaulted him.

The suspect had left the scene in a truck before officers arrived.

When officers searched the residence, they found the body of a 77-year-old black man inside the house. That man’s vehicle was not at the scene.

A Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted the missing black pickup truck and began a pursuit, which ended at I-435 and Truman Road in Kansas City.

A 21-year-old man who is related to both the assault victim and the 77-year-old man was taken into custody.

The truck was stopped, according to dispatch, because police were looking for a possible homicide suspect.

The victim of the assault was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Family told KCTV the 77-year-old found inside the home was Harvey Baldwin, who was a Marine veteran and had just retired from Blue Springs South High School where he worked as a custodian.

Neighbors told KCTV off-camera that the man police arrested had been staying with the 77-year-old man.
