Several hurt following wreck after suspects flee from police in Independence

Posted: Updated:

Multiple people were hurt following a wreck in Independence that happened after a brief police chase.

Independence police say the wreck happened during a police pursuit at East 39th Street and 291 Highway.

According to a press release, felony shoplifting suspects fled from police officers.

The police had spotted the suspects' vehicle leaving the store on E. 39th Street around 8:30 p.m. and the chase lasted less than 30 seconds before the car crashed at the intersection.

The two suspects were taken into custody and police say there was about $8,000 worth of stolen property that was recovered from the car.

Police said that "several" people were taken to area hospitals.

James Hart, a man involved in the crash, says the suspects came westbound into the intersection and hit an SUV, causing it to collide with his van.

"We've all done some dumb driving in our life and bad things, but that was just a whole other level of ding dong unsafe driving by an evil person," Hart said. "I'm just calling it as it is. How could somebody do something like that? And they could have maimed or killed these people."

Hart says officers had to remove the suspects from their vehicle.

"They had to help move or get people out of there with guns drawn," he said. "Seriously, when they're doing that, those people might be stoned or have guns. I just slunk down in the seat and didn't want to take a bullet in my head."

"You hear the little girl crying in there and it was awful," he continued. "Glad police are cracking down on people like that, and they did a good job chasing them. I'm glad they were chasing them, glad they caught them. 'How could someone be that foolish and evil?' is my question."

A GoFundMe page has been established to help the mother injured in the wreck who is the family's sole provider. Click here to donate.
