KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The fine for not wearing a seat belt in Kansas will go from $10 to $30 starting on Saturday.

One Kansas sheriff’s deputy says a seat belt saved his life when a drowsy driver his patrol car and totaled it two years ago.

He now hopes the higher fine will get everyone to make their own safety a priority.

“Everybody should wear their seat belt just to protect themselves because you never know when you’ll get hit. It was an accident that’s all it is an accident,” said Ben Griffith, Deputy Sheriff of Butler County, KS.

Last year 435 people in Kansas died in motor vehicle crashes. It is one of the top ten causes of unintentional death in Kansas and the no. 1 killer of teens, according to AAA.

Two-thirds of the extra money from the higher fine will go towards educating teens about seat belt use.
