KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Authorities in Kansas City say a man and a woman have died after a crash early Wednesday morning.

The crash happened about 4:20 a.m. near 33rd Street and Prospect Avenue.

Police say the car was traveling south on Prospect Avenue when it hit a large tree.

Officers say three people were inside the vehicle. A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene while another person, the driver, was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say speed was a factor in the crash and that no one inside the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.

People living in the area say they did not see the accident happened but called police when they heard the sound of the car hitting the tree.

An accident investigation and reconstruction team is on the scene, trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Police shut down Prospect Avenue at 33rd Street as they investigated the crash. It has reopened.
