KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It’s happened to most of us.

You throw some meat into the freezer, then it gets pushed to the back and you end up having to throw it out.

But now, a local organization called The Pet Connection says it can actually use that food for a great cause.

Even if the meat is expired, the pet rescue can use it to feed homeless dogs.

Anything from chicken to beef is accepted.

The Pet Connection will use the meat to feed dogs at its sanctuary, as well as ones at numerous foster homes throughout the metro.

According to Rich Curtis with The Pet Connection, there are health benefits for dogs to eat this meat.

“Not only is it very good for our elderly dogs with special nutritional needs, we also have special needs dogs that require their meals to be cooked," Curtis said. "So this really allows us to do that and really cater to those needs."
