OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

The Kansas Speedway is not in Overland Park.

That's the message Overland Park police are trying to get out. The department put a message on their Facebook page to explain what they plan to do about a street racing problem throughout the city,

Police are paying more attention to open stretches of road in Overland Park -- places police say drivers are going way to fast.

Police say an officer saw two cars racing down 135th Street near Nieman Road Saturday night. One slowed down, but the other sped off. They never caught them.

Overland Park police are most worried about areas near West 135th Street, 143rd Street and 151st Street.

"Anywhere they can find a long stretch of highway or roadway, that's where they're going to drag race," Officer John Lacey said.

It's not just street racing they're worried about though. Police say, every summer they experience problems with excessive speeding and reckless driving.

Officials say speeding was the main factor in the death of a motorcyclist that happened just over a week ago at 131st Street and Switzer Road. They could not confirm for sure whether he was participating in a race, but they say any form of excessive speeding is dangerous.

"We're looking at injury to not only the people that are drag racing but to the people who are normal driving. We're trying to let the public know that when it comes to drag racing, we have zero tolerance," Lacey said.

Police ask if you have a young driver at home, talk to them about the dangers of street racing and reckless driving.
