KCP&L giving away nest thermostats to help take control of energy usage

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

KCP&L is giving out 35,000 nest thermostats to customers so they can help take control of their energy usage.

The company is doing this in the hopes that customers can help them lower energy demands during peak times.

The thermostat has a function that helps reduce the load on the electrical grid during peak demand times.

It can lower the temperature in your home before peak hours.

It then turns off your AC during peak hours so energy that would have been spent on your home is instead being directed to those without nest thermostats.

“In terms of it learning whether you’re home or away,” said KCP&L’s Brian File. “Or when you change the temperatures according to your own personal comfort preferences. That works for the summer time AC usage as well as the winter time heat usage.”

It can also be controlled from an app on your phone.

The thermostat will be given out to Missouri customers at no cost.

If you sign up, KCP&L will pay you $50 after you get it installed.
